Delhi: Mass protests have erupted across multiple Indian cities, including Delhi, over the brutal killing of Hindu youth Dipu Das in Bangladesh, triggering outrage among Hindu organisations and civil society groups. Demonstrators gathered near the Bangladesh High Commission in the national capital, raising slogans against the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government and demanding strict action against those responsible for what they called a targeted attack on minorities. Heavy police deployment prevented protesters from reaching the diplomatic complex, but tensions remained high as organisers warned that the agitation could intensify if justice is delayed.
Amid the growing anger, Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued an emotional audio statement strongly condemning the killing. She asserted that Dipu Das was falsely accused of insulting the Prophet and said that no evidence had ever been produced to justify the allegations against him. Questioning the extreme violence, Hasina asked where such “barbaric elements” had emerged from, expressing anguish that the same society she once governed had descended into such brutality. She appealed to Dipu Das’s family to remain patient and assured them that she would continue to fight for justice as long as she is alive.
The killing has sparked protests not only in India but also across Bangladesh and neighbouring regions, with demonstrators warning that the attack reflects a deeper pattern of rising extremism and intolerance. In Delhi, protesters said the demonstrations were only a warning and claimed a much larger movement would follow if those behind the lynching are not punished swiftly.
The unrest has been further fuelled by fresh violence inside Bangladesh. In a separate incident, unidentified gunmen shot senior National Citizen Party leader Motaleb Shikder in the head in Khulna, leaving him in critical condition. The attack came just days after prominent student movement leader Sharif Osman Hadi was killed in Dhaka, deepening fears of a spiralling law-and-order crisis. Hadi’s death had already triggered nationwide protests and forced the interim government to announce a day of mourning, even as violence continued to spread.
With political instability mounting and minority safety under global scrutiny, the situation in Bangladesh is increasingly drawing international attention.
