In a bid to control the dissemination of misinformation and maintain public order, the Haryana government has extended the ban on mobile internet and bulk SMS services in seven districts until February 23 amidst a tense standoff with farmers.

The decision to prolong the suspension, which was initially enforced until February 19, comes as the state grapples with escalating tensions between authorities and protesting farmers. The affected districts include Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa.

A notification issued by the Haryana administration underscores the rationale behind the ban, citing concerns over the potential spread of rumors and misinformation through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter. The order aims to prevent the mobilization of agitators and demonstrators who could incite violence, leading to loss of life and damage to public and private property.

The extension of the ban is justified as a measure to safeguard peace and public order in the affected districts. The state administration warns that violators of the order will face legal consequences under relevant provisions.

Meanwhile, tensions reached a boiling point at the Data Singh-Khanauri border, where a clash between protesting farmers and Haryana police resulted in serious injuries to at least 12 police personnel. The confrontation occurred during the “Delhi Chalo” march, with protesters allegedly surrounding police personnel and engaging in violent activities including burning stubble containing chili powder and pelting stones.

In response to the escalating violence, Haryana police issued a plea through social media urging protesters to refrain from such activities. Highlighting the dangers posed by the use of chili powder-infused smoke and violent tactics, officials emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order without resorting to actions that could endanger lives and escalate tensions further.
