Mumbai: The Union Government on Tuesday informed the Lok Sabha that it has no plans to construct an impenetrable border boundary wall along the international border with Pakistan. This was stated in a written reply by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai to an unstarred question raised by Harish Dwivedi (Bharatiya Janata Party).
The governments reply comes just days after the Indian security agencies detected four tunnels along the Indo-Pak border in Samba, Kathua and Pansar sectors along the international border on January 13 last month. This was by far the biggest detection of underground tunnels dug by terrorists from across the border from Pakistan into Indian territory in recent times. Similar tunnels were detected in Arnia in October 2017, R S Pura in July 2018 and again in Samba sector in August 2020.
Dwivedi in his unstarred question wanted to know whether the government had any plans to construct an impenetrable border boundary wall instead of the barbed wire fencing along the international border with Pakistan. He also wanted to know what measures were being taken to strengthen the international border with Bangladesh in view of the instances of cross-border smuggling.
Replying to the queries, MoS MHA, Nityanand Rai informed the house that the government has no plans to construct an impenetrable border boundary wall along the international border with Pakistan.
He further added that the government has adopted multi-pronged approach that includes round the clock surveillance and patrolling along the international borders, construction of observation posts, construction of border fencing and floodlighting, Hi-tech surveillance equipment, upgradation of intelligence gathering network, enhanced cooperation with respective state governments and intelligence agencies to prevent infiltration, smuggling and other illegal activities along the international borders.
Apparently, Dwivedi seems to have taken the cue from former US President Donald Trump’s decision to construct boundary wall along the international border with neighbouring Mexico. President Joe Biden had announced to review the implementation of the impenetrable boundary wall along the Mexican border. According to US media reports, nearly 190 tunnels were found along the Mexican border used by people to smuggle their way into the US.
