After facing several delays, one arm of the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge in Andheri is anticipated to open next week or by the first week of March. However, the completion of the entire bridge has been further postponed from May to December.

The closure of this vital east-west connector has exacerbated traffic congestion in Andheri, causing inconvenience to commuters. Despite multiple extensions, the deadline for opening one side of the bridge has been continuously deferred. Initially slated for partial opening on February 25, this deadline will be missed due to pending tasks that require another seven to ten days for completion.

According to BJP MLA Ameet Satam, significant progress has been made on one section of the Gokhale Bridge, with finishing touches underway. However, final tasks such as curing at SV Road side access and application of a mastic layer still need to be completed. Satam assured that as soon as these tasks are finalized, the bridge will open for two-way movement on one side.

Satam further elaborated that following the partial opening, a height barrier of 2.8 meters will be installed, restricting the passage of vehicles exceeding this height. This barrier is anticipated to be removed by May 31, allowing vehicles of all heights to traverse the bridge thereafter.

However, work on the second side of the bridge has not yet commenced, further prolonging the overall opening timeline. Providing insights into the current status of the second side’s development, Satam explained that the girders are currently in production. Once they arrive, the installation of girders and piers will commence, with the targeted completion date set for December 31, 2024.

The ongoing delays in the Gopal Krishna Gokhale bridge’s construction highlight the challenges faced in executing infrastructure projects amidst logistical and operational hurdles. As commuters eagerly await the bridge’s full opening, authorities continue to work towards ensuring its timely completion to alleviate traffic congestion in Andheri.
