Google Responds After Navi Mumbai Creek Mishap: ‘Maps Did Not Suggest Route’

Navi Mumbai: Tech giant Google has officially responded to the recent incident in Navi Mumbai where a 29-year-old woman accidentally drove her car into Belapur Creek, allegedly following directions on Google Maps. The company has denied any fault in the matter, stating that the route taken was not mapped for navigation and could not have been suggested by its application.

The woman, identified as Shweta Sharma from Kharghar, was reportedly en route to Ulwe when the mishap occurred during heavy rainfall. According to officials, instead of taking the flyover at Dhruvatara jetty, she mistakenly veered onto a narrow road adjacent to the bridge, which led directly to the creek.

Google, in a statement issued after conducting an internal review, said, “We wish to clarify that the road under the bridge is not mapped for navigation in Google Maps, and our internal review confirms that Maps did not recommend a route through it.”

A company spokesperson further added, “The only route Google Maps provides in this area is through the Belapur Bridge over the Panvel Creek. We built Google Maps with safety and reliability in mind and will continue to focus on delivering a high-quality navigation experience to people everywhere.”

The accident, which could have turned tragic, saw a swift response from coastal security police and the Indian Rescue Academy, who managed to save Sharma in time. The vehicle was later pulled out of the water using a crane.
