Former Member of Parliament and ousted Congress leader, Sanjay Nirupam, broke his silence following his six-year expulsion from the grand old party. The expulsion, attributed to alleged indiscipline and anti-party rhetoric, comes in the wake of Nirupam’s outspoken criticisms of the Congress state leadership in Maharashtra, particularly concerning seat-sharing negotiations with the Shiv Sena.

In a sharp retort on social media platform X, Nirupam wryly remarked, “Good to see such promptness by the party,” subtly mocking the swift action taken against him.

The day after his expulsion, Sanjay Nirupam continued to express his bemusement, noting, “It seems like immediately after the party received my resignation letter last night, they decided to issue my expulsion. Good to see such promptness.” Accompanying his statement was a screenshot of the resignation email he had dispatched to party president Mallikarjun Kharge at 10:40 PM, just minutes before the Congress party’s official announcement of his expulsion at 11:14 PM.

The expulsion, communicated via social media by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, cited grievances of indiscipline and making statements contrary to the party’s interests. This decision was precipitated by a series of public criticisms directed at the Shiv Sena and its leader Uddhav Thackeray, as well as remarks regarding the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the leader of another Congress ally, AAP, which were inconsistent with the party’s official stance.

The fallout between Sanjay Nirupam and the Congress party underscores the growing tensions within the political landscape, particularly in Maharashtra’s complex coalition dynamics. Nirupam’s expulsion signifies a widening rift within the party ranks, raising questions about the future trajectory of both the Congress and its erstwhile member.
