Guwahati: Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of prioritizing personal wealth over state development. Gogoi’s remarks come in response to a recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), which ranked Sarma among the richest chief ministers in India.

Taking to social media platform ‘X,’ Gogoi expressed his concerns: “What was promised by BJP Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was that Assam would be among the top five states in India in terms of development. Instead, the Chief Minister himself is on the verge of becoming one of the top five richest Chief Ministers in India.”

Sarma’s wealth status, highlighted in the ADR report released on Monday, has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition. Gogoi also pointed out that four NDA chief ministers from northeast India featured in the top 10 richest list but argued that this wealth stands in stark contrast to the region’s poor performance in Human Development Index (HDI) rankings.

“The gap between the promises made and the reality on the ground is glaring,” Gogoi added.

Chief Minister Sarma had earlier committed to transforming Assam into a top-five developed state in the country. However, Gogoi alleges that these aspirations have been overshadowed by the Chief Minister’s rising financial profile.

The remarks have reignited the political debate in Assam over governance, accountability, and the disconnect between leadership affluence and grassroots development. The BJP has yet to issue an official response to Gogoi’s accusations.
