Lucknow: A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday morning at Chunar Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district, where at least four devotees lost their lives after being hit by a train while crossing the railway tracks. The victims were on their way for a holy dip in the Ganga river on the occasion of Kartik Purnima.
According to preliminary reports, the devotees were struck by the Netaji Express (12311) at around 9:30 a.m. Eyewitnesses and officials revealed that the passengers had alighted from one train and attempted to cross to the opposite platform, unaware of another train approaching from the other direction.
Railway officials confirmed that the passengers mistakenly got down on the non-platform side, leading to the fatal accident. “They got off on the wrong side of the train and were hit by another train coming from the opposite direction,” an official said.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. Taking swift cognizance of the tragedy, he directed district officials to rush to the site and oversee immediate relief and rescue operations.
