Former Congress MLA Debendra Sharma from Odisha’s Aul constituency has taken a significant step to support his daughter’s candidacy in the upcoming Assembly elections. Struggling with campaign expenses, Sharma decided to sell a portion of his ancestral land in his native village.

The sale of five decimal homestead land reflects Sharma’s commitment to supporting his daughter’s candidacy despite facing financial challenges. He cited the lack of monetary assistance from the Congress party, attributing it to the freezing of party accounts by the Income Tax department.

Sharma emphasized his daughter Dr. Debasmita Sharma’s candidacy, highlighting the financial strain on the family due to heavy campaign spending by rival candidates. Debasmita, a former government doctor, left her job to pursue public service.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the campaign funds provided by the party, Sharma made the difficult decision to sell ancestral land to generate additional resources for his daughter’s campaign.

Despite tough competition from prominent opponents like Odisha minister Pratap Keshari Deb of BJD and BJP’s Krushna Chandra Panda, Sharma remains hopeful of his daughter’s victory. Debasmita was unavailable for comment due to her busy campaign schedule.

Simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls are scheduled in Odisha, starting May 13, with results declared on June 2.
