Mumbai : With a record break rainfall recorded since Monday late night in the South Mumbai, a mass destruction was seen after the incident of landslide in Pedder Road. For the first time in the posh areas like Kemp’s corner, Marine drive, Pedder Road, Walkeshwar, Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) these areas were water logged.
There has been a record rain since Wednesday morning. The area has received 300 mm of rainfall. The wind speed was 101 km per hour. Yesterday’s type was like a cyclone, said BMC commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal after visiting the spot where land slide occured at Pedder road on Wednesday late night.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal visited at Pedder road where land slide occured on Wednesday late night to get an idea of the total loss and also directed officials to be prepared .
After experiencing heavy damages to private and public property at various places in the city due to the heavy downpour since Monday late evening.
Since Monday late evening, Mumbai has experience heavy downpour due to a huge loss like water logging, diversion of traffic, traffic jams, house collapse, flood like situation, vehicle break down, damage to roads and many other public and private sector offices.
“There has been a record rain since yesterday afternoon. The area has received 300 mm of rainfall. The wind speed was 101 km per hour. Yesterday’s type was like a cyclone. The Colaba Observatory has recorded 340 mm of rainfall and Santacruz is recorded up to 130mm. All the railway lines in Mumbai have been resumed in the morning. The ICU container at the National Sports Club of India ( NSCI) Dome was also affected. We have quickly shifted them to another place. Everything else is fine. There is no water logging anywhere in the whole of Mumbai”, said Iqbal Singh Chahal, BMC commissioner.
Further he said,” There is no water logging anywhere in the whole of Mumbai. 40 to 50 trees have collapsed due to the collapse of the wall. The one-way traffic to Haji Ali will start by 1 pm.
A large tree has fallen in the hanging garden, due to which a pipeline has burst. It will take about 24 hours to repair the pipeline. Currently, 50 tankers have been started to prevent water shortage. 25 spots we will chose and those water tankers will me avaliable at those spots.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there will be some rain today. We are keeping an eye on the weather forcast. The rain has stopped since last night. The Mithi River is also running out of danger level. In front of the Mantralaya, 300 mm of rain fell in 4 hours. Therefore, water was stagnant in this area. If it rains continuous in 4 hours, again such a situation will arise.
Local trains were brought back to CST and Churchgate and passengers were shifted by boats and other means to temporary shelter homes near CST and Churchgate, provided food.
