Flood ravaged people of Tripura are slowly limping back to normalcy from the catastrophic deluge

Agartala: Today a large section of the Tripura populace in Unakoti and Gomati district’s might have received respite from the past 3/4 days’ heavy downpour, there are still many areas which are still inundated with floods. The official figure says that 17 lakh people of the 40-lakh-population-State, have been largely affected due to the floods in last few days.

These 17 lakhs include many who have been stranded due the flood waters engulfing the habitation, primarily near the riverine sides. This was also inspirational time to look for yeoman service. Several agencies, say for instance Assam Rifles, swung into action to carry out rescue and relief works on war-footing measures at remote, far flung hill areas and even at suburbs.

The jawans of the 18 Assam Rifles who were deployed for the rescue operation have carried out relentless service since more than four days as the floods engulfed low-lying areas in Unakoti and Gomati districts. The rise in the water level of Gomati river resulted in submergence of cropping fields; Also, residential areas were inundated with scores getting marooned.

The operation Jal Rahat carried out by the sentinels of the North East is attributable to save and rescue those who were stuck in the deluge. One such team of the 18 Battalion of Assam Rifles was pressed into service at the Dak Bungalow locality of Udaipur in Gomati district; they were found toiling to ferry the distressed to safer places from houses surrounded by flood water.

But the task undertaken by these jawans might have been not as easy as it seems, because the personnel have had to make fervent appeal to the people to vacate their house and cooperate with the rescue team for being shifted to safer locations. In order to send message to the distressed people to board the rescue boat, the jawans have to blow whistle aloud.

Not only that they also had to knock on the doors to check that nobody is left behind. The rescue operation became more complex and challenging after dusk and with outage of electricity to avoid risk in that time of frightening shower. Gradually meandering through the flood water, the jawans have had to risk their lives by escaping from the wild predators like snakes, besides balancing the boat with people on it.

It is for the first time in 30 years that Tripura has faced a calamitous situation of an enormous magnitude. Power supply is hampered – farm fields are hit hard/drastically – caving of roads emerge here and there – drinking water connections are washed away, there’s hardly anything which has been found not distressed or affected due to the wrath of floods! These distressed days have once again witnessed a contrasting valour and yeoman/humanitarian acts of our Army Jawans in trying and challenging times of calamity.
