Mumbai: The popularity of fitness apps rose rapidly in the last six months due to Covid-19 pandemic as people forced to stayed at home and with Gyms being closed, so people in order to remain fit started downloading fitness apps for workout, to track calories and for many other things. However, India tops the list in downloading of the fitness apps.

Between Q1 and Q2 of 2020, health and fitness app downloads grew by 46% worldwide.

India saw the highest increase in downloads, rising by 156%. That translates to 58 million new active users, almost the entire population of Italy.

Apart from India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region saw the second highest growth in downloads, at a 55% increase, followed by Asia-Pacific with a 47% increase.

Here’s a look at the regional breakdown.

This doesn’t mean that people have just downloaded the apps and never used it, as per the data fitness apps also saw a rise in daily active users and people were using them.

Globally, daily active users for fitness apps increased by 24% from Q1 to Q2.

As with downloads, India saw the largest increase in DAUs with an 84% increase, or 12 million new users. MENA saw the second-highest growth (which also aligns with downloads) at 28%.

Here’s a look at the growth in each region:

In April and May the three apps which top the chart are ‘Calm’ which is used for sleep, meditation, and relaxation, ‘Headspace’ and ‘MyFitnessPal’ used for tracking your diet and exercise.

However, June ‘MyFitnessPal’ took the lead and came on the first position, Calm and Headspace came second and third, respectively.

This does not mean that if the lockdown curbed people will start hitting the gym again, many are enjoying the home workout. Even the gym understood the importance of digitalization and started online training. Exercise equipment company Peloton has surged in popularity this year—it’s set to double its sales in 2020, with an estimated $1.8 billion in revenue by the end of the year.
