A shocking security scare unfolded in Jammu on Wednesday when a man allegedly attempted to shoot former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah during a wedding function. The accused was quickly overpowered by security personnel, preventing any harm to the veteran political leader.
Police identified the attacker as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a 63-year-old resident of Jammu. According to authorities, he used his licensed firearm in the attempt but missed his target.

Investigators said the incident occurred at a wedding event attended by several political leaders and guests. CCTV footage from the venue reportedly shows Jamwal approaching Abdullah from behind and pointing a pistol at him from point-blank range.
He then fired a shot, which missed Abdullah. Security personnel stationed at the venue reacted immediately and managed to restrain the attacker before he could fire again.
Officials said Abdullah had been present at the function for more than an hour before the attack took place.
Accused Claims 20-Year Grudge
During interrogation, the accused reportedly told police that he had been planning to kill the senior leader for nearly two decades due to a personal grievance.
According to police officials, Jamwal told investigators that he had wanted to kill Abdullah for the past 20 years and described the attempt as part of his “personal agenda.” He also reportedly stated that Abdullah was “lucky to survive.”
Authorities confirmed that the weapon used in the incident was legally licensed and belonged to the accused.
No Terror Angle Found So Far
Police said preliminary investigation suggests there is no terror link to the attack. Officials indicated that the accused appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Following the shooting attempt, some people present at the venue—including supporters of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference—reportedly assaulted the accused before security forces intervened and took him into custody.
Senior Leaders Present at Venue
Among those present during the incident was Surinder Choudhary, who was attending the wedding but escaped unharmed.
Police also revealed that the accused owns several shops in the old city area of Jammu and earns rental income from them.
Authorities have seized the pistol used in the attack and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials reiterated that while the attack appears to have been motivated by a personal grudge, further inquiry is underway to determine all aspects of the case.
