Mumbai: The Budget Session of the Maharashtra Legislature began on a sombre note on Monday as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis moved a condolence motion in memory of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Addressing the House, Fadnavis said it was a deeply painful moment for him personally, admitting he never imagined he would have to speak on Pawar’s passing in such circumstances.

He described Pawar as more than a political associate, calling him a mentor and companion whose presence shaped his own journey in public life.

Remembering an Unmatched Administrator

Recalling their long association, the Chief Minister highlighted Pawar’s sharp administrative skills and decisive leadership, particularly during his tenure handling the crucial finance portfolio. Fadnavis said Pawar’s ability to take firm and sometimes unpopular decisions set him apart from most leaders.

He noted that Pawar was known for his discipline, early-morning routines and detailed planning, qualities that earned him respect across party lines. According to Fadnavis, Maharashtra politics has lost a leader whose experience and authority will be difficult to replace. Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar worked together politically for over a decade, serving in key roles during multiple Maharashtra governments, including as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister/Finance Minister respectively.

Governor’s Address Marks Formal Start

Earlier in the day, the session formally commenced with a joint sitting of both Houses, addressed by Governor Acharya Devvrat. The proceedings began with Vande Mataram, followed by the National Anthem and the state anthem Jai Jai Maharashtra Maza. The Governor opened his speech in Marathi and later continued in Hindi.

In his address, Devvrat said the state government would be guided by the ideals of Rajmata Jijau, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Birsa Munda and other social reformers. He also outlined the achievements of the BJP-led Mahayuti government over the past year and its roadmap for the future.
