Fadnavis Clarifies Amit Shah’s ‘Crutches’ Remark, Says “Friends Are Allies, Not Support Sticks”; Slams Opposition Over Doctor’s Death, Electoral Roll Row

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday sought to clear the air surrounding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remark that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra does not rely on “crutches.” Addressing reporters, Fadnavis said the comment was being misinterpreted by those trying to create rifts within the ruling alliance.

“Those who are questioning Amit Shah’s statement do not understand the meaning of ‘crutches’. Friends are not crutches,” said Fadnavis, underlining that the BJP’s coalition with Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction is built on mutual respect and shared governance goals.

Reaffirming the unity within the Mahayuti government, Fadnavis added, “We are working as a strong, coordinated team for Maharashtra’s progress. Our alliance stands on principles and collective leadership, not dependency.”

The Chief Minister also launched a scathing attack on the Opposition for allegedly politicising the tragic suicide of a woman doctor in Phaltan, Satara district. “It is unfortunate that such a sensitive issue is being exploited for political mileage. I have assured that the investigation will be fair and transparent, and no one will be spared,” he said.

Responding to opposition parties’ criticism over alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls, Fadnavis accused them of creating “needless panic.” “This is cover fire for their upcoming defeat. Even the BJP had pointed out duplicate entries, but unlike them, we provided evidence. Those shouting now never objected earlier,” he remarked.

Addressing the ongoing Pune Jain Trust land controversy, Fadnavis clarified that it was a “private dispute” between a developer and members of the Jain community. “The government has acted as per the wishes of the community. Dragging Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol into it is nothing but a politically motivated attempt ahead of civic polls,” he said.
