Ahmedabad: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram collapsed due to extreme heat while visiting the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, during the Congress party’s national convention.

The incident occurred as top Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, gathered at the iconic ashram to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and participate in a bhajan session. The temperature in Ahmedabad has been soaring amid heatwave conditions, which appear to have taken a toll on the 78-year-old leader.

Eyewitnesses said Chidambaram looked visibly uncomfortable before fainting on the premises. He was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. Congress party officials later confirmed that he is stable and currently under medical observation.

“This was a precautionary step. The extreme weather has affected many across Gujarat. Mr. Chidambaram is being well taken care of,” a party spokesperson said.

Chidambaram’s health scare briefly disrupted the scheduled events, but other leaders continued with the program at the ashram. The Congress convention in Gujarat is seen as a crucial moment for the party, bringing together its top brass to deliberate on strategy, election preparedness, and internal restructuring.

The party’s gathering in Gujarat—a politically significant state—also sends a symbolic message of reconnecting with Gandhian values, especially at a time when political rhetoric across the country is intensifying ahead of the general elections.
