Union Minister and North Mumbai Lok Sabha MP Piyush Goyal became visibly emotional on Thursday while reminiscing about his cherished memories with the late business tycoon Ratan Tata. Speaking to news agency, Goyal recalled a heartwarming breakfast at his home in Mumbai, where Tata’s genuine appreciation for a simple meal showcased his character.

Reflecting on that memorable morning, Goyal said, “I recall when he came home once in Mumbai for breakfast, we had only served a simple Idli, Sambhar, Dosa, but he was so appreciative. I mean, he must be having the world’s best cooks. But he was so appreciative of that simple breakfast. He was so kind to all of us in the family.”

Goyal further described Tata’s kindness, saying, “He was so kind to the server who was serving the breakfast. At the end of the very beautiful couple of hours that he had spent at home, when he was leaving, he asked my wife very sweetly — would you like to take a picture with me? We really wanted to do it, but were shy to ask. He offered it, and it is these small thoughtful gestures that make the man ‘The Ratan Tata’— whom 140 crores Indians love and the world loves.”

Through tears, Goyal emphasized Tata’s sensitivity and dedication, noting, “Ratan Tata was a very sensitive person. All these years, he established the Tata group internationally and made a name for India. He had a charitable character. He was always ready to contribute to every good work. There is no individual, I believe, who asked him for help for good work and did not receive it.”

Goyal recalled a particular instance of Tata’s generosity, saying, “I remember many years ago, a group of young doctors wanted to start a hospital in Sambhajinagar. These doctors were volunteers for public service and wanted to establish the hospital without much pay. When this came to the knowledge of Ratan Tata, he, without a second thought, provided all his assistance, and the hospital came into being.” He continued, “This hospital is still serving and providing treatment to lakhs of people in the name of Dr. Hedgewar Hospital every year. Today, it has developed into a big hospital and is expanding to a medical college as well.”

The Union Minister also highlighted Tata’s significant contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said, “When the country was facing the Covid pandemic, Ratan Tata pledged ₹1,500 crore, without any hesitation and any condition. This helped us strengthen our hands to fight the battle against Covid.”

As the nation mourns the loss of Ratan Tata, the beloved industrialist’s mortal remains were brought to the NCPA lawns at Mumbai’s Nariman Point this morning, allowing the public to pay their last respects before the funeral ceremony. According to a statement from the Tata Trust, the mortal remains will embark on their final journey at 4 PM today. Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in the city.

At 4 PM, his mortal remains will be taken to the Prayer Hall at the Worli Crematorium for the final rites, as confirmed by the Tata Trust. The outpouring of grief and gratitude for Tata’s life and legacy continues to resonate across the nation.
