In a significant move aimed at ensuring fair and transparent elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken decisive action by dismissing several key officials, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, along with Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners. Additionally, the Secretary of the General Administrative Department (GAD) in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh, who were managing responsibilities in the respective Chief Minister’s Offices, have also been removed by the ECI.
Iqbal Singh Chahal, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1989 batch of the Maharashtra cadre, has held numerous crucial positions both within the Maharashtra government and at the national level throughout his career.
The ECI’s directive to transfer top bureaucrats in several states underscores its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. Secretaries in six states, namely Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, have been relieved of their duties by the poll body. Additionally, the Secretary of the General Administrative Department in both Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh has also been removed.
Furthermore, the Election Commission has ordered the removal of Home Secretaries in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, who were holding charges in their respective Chief Minister’s Offices. Additionally, the Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal has also been removed from office.
The dismissal of Brihan Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, along with other officials, signifies the Election Commission’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the sanctity of the electoral process.
