In a significant move ahead of the much-anticipated Lok Sabha elections 2024 and Assembly polls in certain states, the Election Commission (EC) has enforced a ban on conducting, publishing, or publicizing exit polls. The prohibition, announced through a notification on Friday (March 29), extends to Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim.

The prescribed period for the prohibition is from 7 am on April 19 to 6:30 pm on June 1. This blanket restriction encompasses all forms of media, be it print, electronic, or any other dissemination method.

Notably, the display of any election-related content, including the results of opinion polls or surveys, on electronic media will be strictly prohibited during the crucial 48-hour period leading up to the conclusion of the polling process for both the general elections and Assembly polls in the specified states.

The Lok Sabha elections, involving 543 parliamentary seats, are slated to be conducted in seven phases commencing from April 19. With nearly 97 crore eligible voters expected to cast their ballots, the electoral exercise holds immense significance for the democratic fabric of the nation. The culmination of this electoral journey will witness the counting of votes on June 4, thereby determining the political landscape of the country for the foreseeable future.
