Kargil: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde arrived in Kargil on Saturday to participate in the Sarhad Shauryathon, a marathon being held to commemorate the bravery of India’s armed forces and mark significant military milestones, including the 75th anniversary of the Zoji La Battle and 25 years of Operation Vijay.
Ahead of the marathon event scheduled for Sunday, Shinde visited Sonamarg and Drass, interacting with locals, traders, and tourism-related businesses affected by the recent drop in footfall following the terror incident in Pahalgam. Expressing solidarity with the local population, he assured them of continued support and acknowledged their resilience in the face of adversity.
Taking to social media platform X, Shinde shared emotional reflections on the 1999 Kargil War, describing the marathon as a heartfelt tribute to the fallen heroes. “It has been 26 years since the Kargil War, but the courage of our soldiers still echoes in every corner of this land. The Sarhad Shauryathon is not just a run; it is a salute to those who gave their lives for our tomorrow,” he wrote.
The marathon, jointly organised by the Indian Army, Sarhad Foundation (Pune), and Aarham Foundation, is a part of the region’s growing efforts to blend patriotism with public engagement, especially among youth and fitness enthusiasts.
Shinde will officially flag off the marathon at Drass on Sunday morning. “As an Indian citizen, it is my honour and duty to be present at this event. The sacrifices made by our soldiers deserve more than remembrance—they deserve national participation and reverence,” he stated.
The Sarhad Shauryathon is not only a sporting event but a powerful reminder of India’s military legacy in the region. Participants from across the country have gathered in Kargil to run in memory of the brave soldiers who defended the nation during one of its most intense border conflicts.
