A dramatic incident unfolded at Mumbai’s Mantralaya building on Monday when a man attempted suicide by jumping off the third floor, only to be saved by the safety nets installed inside the building. The harrowing moment, captured on camera, has since gone viral on social media.
In the video footage, an elderly man can be seen plunging off the building, landing safely into the installed nets while chanting ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ He attributes his extreme actions to the purported hooliganism of ‘Suresh Yadav,’ although the precise motive behind his suicide attempt remains unclear.
Despite pleas from security personnel urging him to descend, the man assures them, “I will come down, you don’t take tension,” as he continues to chant slogans amidst a gathering crowd.
Reports suggest that the individual is a vadapav vendor and resorted to drastic measures following authorities’ action against his stall. Mumbai Police promptly took him into custody and escorted him to the Marine Drive Police Station for further proceedings.
This incident echoes a similar occurrence where a youth previously jumped off the Mantralaya building, demanding the recruitment of teachers, only to be caught by the safety nets on the second floor. The youth, too, voiced his grievances while staging the protest and was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement.
The installation of safety nets within the Mantralaya building has proven to be a crucial measure, preventing fatalities in numerous instances where individuals attempted suicide by jumping off the structure. Without these safety precautions in place, the toll of casualties could have been considerably higher.
