Washington: In a bold escalation of the US-China trade war, President Donald Trump announced a 100 per cent additional tariff on Chinese goods, alongside new export controls on critical software, set to take effect from November 1.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused China of taking an “extraordinarily aggressive position” by implementing large-scale export controls that would impact every product China manufactures. He described China’s actions as “absolutely unheard of in international trade” and a “moral disgrace” in dealing with other nations.

“It is impossible to believe that China would have taken such an action, but they have, and the rest is history,” Trump wrote, emphasizing the severity of the trade escalation.

Despite the heightened tensions, Trump confirmed that his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping has not been cancelled. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he stated, “No, I haven’t cancelled. However, I’m not sure if we’ll have it. I’ll be there regardless. I would assume we might have it. However, they hit the world with something. It was shocking. Out of the blue, they came up with this whole import-export concept, and nobody knew anything about it.”

Trump’s move marks a major intensification in the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China, sending global markets into uncertainty and signaling that Washington is ready to take aggressive measures to counter Beijing’s economic strategies.
