Chennai: BJP Mahila Morcha National President Vanathi Srinivasan on Tuesday accused the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu of suppressing political dissent by restricting protests and detaining opposition leaders even before scheduled demonstrations.

Speaking to reporters, Srinivasan alleged that the DMK government has been systematically denying permission for political agitations, even at designated protest sites.

“In the last few months, we have seen a new trend by the ruling DMK government… Whenever an issue related to law and order arises and political parties seek permission for lawful protests, the government denies it. But yesterday, some of our leaders were detained from their homes, while others were arrested even before reaching the protest site,” she claimed.

The Tamil Nadu BJP had planned a demonstration in front of the TASMAC headquarters to protest against the state’s liquor policy and alleged law enforcement failures. However, the party accused the government of preemptively cracking down on its members to silence dissent.
