New Delhi: In a significant development in the defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, a Saket court on Monday ordered the release of social activist Medha Patkar on one year of probation, citing her age, absence of prior convictions, and the nature of the offence.

The case stems from Patkar’s conviction in a defamation suit filed by Saxena. While her conviction had earlier been upheld by a sessions court, the latest ruling offers her conditional relief under the Probation of Offenders Act.

Medha Patkar, who appeared before the court via video conferencing, had originally been sentenced to five months’ imprisonment by a Magistrate court. However, taking a lenient view, the court has opted for probation instead of jail time.

“The court directed to release social activist Medha Patkar on the probation of one year of good conduct,” the order stated. Additionally, the court reduced the compensation amount from ₹10 lakh to ₹1 lakh, which Patkar is now directed to deposit.

The defamation case dates back to Patkar’s public statements against VK Saxena during his tenure as the chief of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, which Saxena claimed had damaged his reputation.
