Delhi Chokes Under Thick Smog Again as Air Quality Slips into Very Poor and Severe Levels

Delhi: Delhi woke up to another morning of thick smog on Monday, with air pollution continuing to remain at alarming levels across the national capital. Air quality stayed largely in the “very poor” category, while several pockets recorded “severe” pollution, raising fresh health concerns for residents.

Early morning readings showed that pollution levels were consistently high across the city. As per official air quality monitoring data, Delhi’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the mid-360s, indicating very poor air that can cause breathing discomfort even among healthy individuals. The situation was worse in some areas, with parts of north and northwest Delhi reporting AQI levels above 400.

Narela emerged as the most polluted area in the city, registering AQI levels crossing the 418 mark. Other localities such as Anand Vihar, Bawana, Jahangirpuri, Mundka, Rohini and Wazirpur also witnessed severe pollution, offering little relief to residents stepping outdoors.

Even areas with comparatively lower pollution failed to provide comfort. Dilshad Garden, which recorded the lowest AQI in the city, still remained in the very poor category, highlighting the widespread nature of the smog.

According to pollution control authorities, air quality in the very poor to severe range can trigger respiratory issues, eye irritation and throat discomfort. Children, senior citizens and people with asthma or heart-related conditions are considered most vulnerable during such episodes.

The dense layer of smog also reduced visibility across Delhi, affecting early morning travel. The Indira Gandhi International Airport issued an advisory, stating that low-visibility procedures were being followed. While flights continued to operate, passengers were advised to check with airlines as weather-related delays remained possible.

Weather conditions are also contributing to the problem. The India Meteorological Department has predicted moderate fog during the day. Temperatures are expected to remain low, with the maximum hovering around 21 degrees Celsius and the minimum close to 9 degrees Celsius, conditions that often trap pollutants near the ground.
