Senior Congress leader and former Member of Parliament, Milind Deora, announced his resignation from the party on Sunday morning, signaling a significant shift in his political allegiance. The leader is poised to align himself with the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, with an official announcement scheduled at 2 pm. The move comes amidst speculation and political dynamics in Maharashtra.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Deora marked the end of a pivotal chapter in his political journey, expressing gratitude to leaders, colleagues, and party workers for their unwavering support during his family’s 55-year association with the Congress.

Born into the political legacy of veteran Congress leader Murli Deora, Milind achieved distinction as one of the youngest Members of Parliament, winning elections in 2004 and 2009 from the Mumbai South Constituency. His subsequent appointment as the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology in 2011 highlighted his rising influence within the Union Government of India.

However, Deora faced setbacks in 2014 and 2019, losing successive Lok Sabha elections to Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant. The political landscape shifted in 2019 with the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, bringing Congress into collaboration with Shiv Sena and NCP. This alliance posed a new political challenge for Deora, who had been at odds with Shiv Sena throughout his political career in Mumbai.

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approached, tensions escalated regarding the Mumbai South parliamentary constituency. Deora, acknowledging the likelihood of contesting against Arvind Sawant, urged supporters to maintain composure and cautioned Shiv Sena against preemptive claims on any constituency before official seat-sharing discussions.

While Deora attributes his decision to the Shiv Sena’s insistence on his traditional seat, political observers have long speculated about his potential party switch. Jairam Ramesh, the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), revealed that Deora had expressed concerns about losing his seat and contacted him on Friday. Ramesh suggested that the timing of Deora’s resignation was orchestrated by the BJP to divert attention from Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

The departure of Milind Deora marks a significant development in Maharashtra’s political landscape, underscoring the evolving alliances and challenges within the state.
