India on Monday recorded a total of 1,009 active COVID-19 cases, with 752 new cases reported across various states, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Leading the tally is Kerala, which reported 430 active cases, the highest in the country. Other states showing a concerning rise include Maharashtra with 209 cases, Delhi with 104, Gujarat with 83, and Karnataka with 47.

Tragically, a 21-year-old COVID-19 patient from Mumbra succumbed to the illness at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Kalwa Hospital in Thane. The patient was admitted on May 22, 2025, and passed away during treatment, the Thane Municipal Corporation confirmed.

While the numbers reflect a moderate increase, officials stress that most infections remain mild, requiring no hospitalization. A senior health official told reporters, “It is observed that most of these cases are mild and under home care. However, the Union Health Ministry remains vigilant and is proactively monitoring the situation through its various agencies.”

Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava chaired a meeting on Saturday to assess the current surge, particularly from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. Health authorities emphasized that despite the recent rise, hospital resources remain sufficient, and the situation is being closely tracked.
