Mumbai: Maharashtra is witnessing a quiet but steady uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 66 new infections reported on May 27. Mumbai continues to be the hotspot, contributing 31 of these cases, while other districts like Pune (18), Thane (7), Navi Mumbai (4), Pimpri Chinchwad (3), Nagpur (2), and Sangli (1) recorded fewer instances.
According to data compiled up to May 26, Maharashtra had 210 active COVID-19 cases—marking a rise of 154 cases since May 19, 2025. Nationwide, India reported 1,010 active infections, with Kerala topping the list at 430 cases.
Health officials have emphasized that most current infections are mild. “There is no cause for panic,” said a Union Health Ministry official. “We’re seeing low hospitalization rates and negligible severity in most patients.”
However, concern lingers after the posthumous COVID-19 diagnosis of a 47-year-old woman from Kalyan, who was being treated for typhoid. She succumbed to her illness before testing positive, making hers the fifth COVID-related death in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) within a week. Officials from the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) have confirmed that three other patients are currently under observation—one has recovered while two are undergoing treatment.
To address the situation, KDMC has activated isolation wards and an RT-PCR testing lab. “We’re prepared and closely monitoring the spread,” said a senior KDMC health officer. “Most cases remain mild, but we are maintaining readiness.”
India’s Health Ministry has also stepped up surveillance in light of increasing cases reported in Singapore and Hong Kong, attributed largely to the JN.1 variant—part of the Omicron lineage. “We are reviewing the developments closely and will adapt our response as needed,” stated the Ministry.
Maharashtra’s case tally jumped further to 69 on May 26, according to the state health department. Mumbai alone recorded 37 new cases, followed by Thane (19), Navi Mumbai (7), Pune (2), and one case each in Pimpri Chinchwad, Kolhapur, Raigad, and Latur.
