Mumbai: The sessions court hearing the bail plea of former Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable Chetansingh Chaudhary has been informed that the accused is currently in stable medical condition, according to a recent health assessment submitted by Thane prison authorities.
The updated medical report was sought by the court as part of proceedings on Chaudhary’s bail application, in which he has cited serious mental health concerns. Chaudhary is facing charges for the fatal shooting of four people aboard the Jaipur–Mumbai Central Superfast Express in July 2023, an incident that shocked the nation.
During the previous hearing, the court had directed jail authorities to conduct a fresh and detailed medical evaluation of the accused and place the findings on record. Complying with the order, a team of doctors examined Chaudhary on December 18 and reported that his vital parameters were stable, with no immediate medical distress observed.
Chaudhary had approached the sessions court seeking bail in November, arguing that his mental condition renders him unfit for continued incarceration. His counsel claimed that the accused suffers from a neurological condition involving white matter damage and experiences severe psychological disturbances. The defence further asserted that Chaudhary allegedly remains unaware of the crime due to his mental state at the time of the incident.
According to the bail plea, Chaudhary is said to experience delusional episodes, confusion and impaired judgment, and requires specialised psychiatric care outside the prison system. The defence maintained that the case is still at the trial stage and that continued judicial custody is unnecessary given his alleged medical condition.
The prosecution, however, strongly opposed the plea, contending that there is substantial evidence linking the accused to the crime and that medical grounds alone cannot justify his release at this stage.
