Mumbai: The Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Mumbai, the Russian House in Mumbai and VEB.RF had organised “Judo Week in India”. The Russian side traditionally organises such sports competitions in India under the auspices of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa). Many events, including football, volleyball and badminton tournaments, were organised in the previous years.
Upon the invitation of VEB.RF a team of active professional athletes and judo coaches from Russia arrived in India. The coaches conducted training seminars and open sessions for Indian students. Russian and Indian athletes participated in sparring sessions. The main event of the “Judo Week”, the actual two-day tournament, will be organised on October 7-8 in Mumbai. A total of five teams, to represent the five BRICS nations, will take part in the competition.
“Expanding interactions in the field of sports between the BRICS countries, particularly between Russia and India, will inevitably lead to the strengthening of ties between our countries. The leaders of our countries traditionally pay great attention to the development of sports, and more so within the framework of BRICS”, said the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Mumbai, Alexey Surovtsev. He particularly thanked the organisers of the event from the Indian side.
The representative of VEB.RF in India, Alexander Perminov stressed the importance of sports tournaments for the development of relations between the countries: “It is prestigious for us to organise sports events under the auspices of BRICS. Sport is an integral part of life, and it helps to expand the horizons of cooperation between countries”, he emphasised.
Following the results of the competition, all the teams and tournament participants will be awarded cups, medals and personalised certificates.
