Delhi: In a message that underscores the political significance of the transition at the top of India’s judiciary, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday extended warm wishes to Justice Surya Kant, who has taken oath as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. Justice Kant begins a 14-month tenure at a time when debates around judicial independence, constitutional values and public confidence in institutions have been central to national discourse.

Kharge, in a post on X, said Justice Kant’s elevation comes at a “critical juncture” and expressed hope that his leadership would strengthen the judiciary’s role as the guardian of constitutional principles. The Congress chief added that the incoming CJI’s tenure would be instrumental in “reinforcing institutional integrity and public trust in the rule of law,” ultimately advancing the constitutional promise of justice for every citizen.

Justice Surya Kant succeeds outgoing Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and is expected to preside over several high-impact matters, including cases concerning civil liberties, federal relations, electoral processes, and institutional accountability. His tenure will also oversee key judicial reforms and administrative decisions within the Supreme Court.
