Congress Says ‘Extortion Begins’ After Rs 3 Petrol-Diesel Price Hike, Targets PM Modi

Opposition Attacks Centre Over Fuel Price Increase After Elections

The Congress party on Friday strongly criticised the Centre after petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 3 per litre across the country, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of burdening citizens immediately after the conclusion of Assembly elections.

The opposition linked the fuel price hike to the completion of polls in four states and one Union Territory, alleging that the government delayed the decision until voting ended.

Launching a sharp attack on the Centre, Congress said, “Inflation Man Modi has once again unleashed the whip on the public today. Petrol and diesel have been increased by 3-3 rupees. Meanwhile, CNG prices have also been raised by 2 rupees. Elections over — Modi’s extortion begins.”

Apart from petrol and diesel, CNG prices were also raised by Rs 2, adding further pressure on household budgets and transport costs.

Petrol Nears Rs 98 Per Litre in Delhi

Following the latest revision, petrol prices in New Delhi increased from Rs 94.77 to Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel prices climbed from Rs 87.67 to Rs 90.67 per litre.

The fuel hike comes amid soaring global crude oil prices driven by the continuing West Asia conflict and fears of disruptions in international oil supply routes.

Brent crude prices have remained above the $100 per barrel level as tensions involving the US, Israel and Iran continue to impact global energy markets.

West Asia Conflict Pushes Global Oil Prices Higher

The ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have intensified concerns over energy security worldwide, especially after disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.

The widening conflict has affected major oil-producing nations in the region, contributing to sharp volatility in international crude prices over the past several weeks.

Despite the surge in global oil prices, the Indian government has maintained that the country has sufficient fuel reserves and there is no immediate shortage of petroleum products.

Government Appeals for Fuel Conservation

Authorities have urged citizens to use fuel responsibly as uncertainty continues in global energy markets due to the prolonged conflict in West Asia.

Experts believe fuel prices in India may continue to fluctuate depending on international crude oil trends and geopolitical developments in the region.
