In a move signaling intolerance towards dissenting voices within its ranks, the Congress party announced on Saturday the expulsion of senior leader Pramod Krishnam for a period of six years. The decision, attributed to Krishnam’s alleged indiscipline and repeated anti-party statements, underscores the party’s resolve to enforce discipline among its members.
The expulsion was confirmed by All India Congress Committee general secretary KC Venugopal in a press statement, wherein he cited Krishnam’s continuous defiance of party directives as the basis for the disciplinary action. Krishnam, who contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as the Congress candidate from Lucknow, has been vocal in his criticism of the party’s leadership and policies.
In response to his expulsion, Krishnam took to social media on Sunday, reiterating his unwavering commitment to certain principles. “There cannot be a compromise over Ram and Rashtra (nation),” he asserted in a post directed at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. This statement aligns with Krishnam’s recent expressions of admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s involvement in the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, a sentiment that sharply contrasts with the party’s official stance.
Krishnam’s divergence from the party line became more pronounced when he openly lauded PM Modi’s role in the Ayodhya event while simultaneously criticizing the Congress leadership for their absence at the ceremony. His actions, viewed as a departure from party protocol, further strained his relationship with the Congress hierarchy.
In a recent development, Krishnam visited Lucknow to extend an invitation to Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the foundation laying program of Kalkidham in Sambhal district. Scheduled for February 19, the event will witness PM Modi inaugurating the construction project, marking another instance of Krishnam’s divergence from Congress ideology.
The expulsion of Pramod Krishnam serves as a reminder of the internal challenges faced by political parties in maintaining unity and adherence to party principles. As parties grapple with dissenting voices and divergent opinions, the enforcement of discipline becomes paramount to preserving organizational coherence and electoral viability. Krishnam’s expulsion, while indicative of the Congress party’s firm stance on internal discipline, also highlights the complex dynamics at play within India’s political landscape.
