Supreme Court reserves judgment on Pawan Khera anticipatory bail plea in Assam defamation case
The Supreme Court reserved its judgment on Congress leader Pawan Khera’s anticipatory bail plea in the defamation case filed by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.

New Delhi: The Congress has distanced itself from the controversial remarks made by its national spokesperson Shama Mohamed against Team India captain Rohit Sharma, following massive backlash. Party leader Pawan Khera clarified that Mohamed’s views do not reflect the party’s position and confirmed that she was asked to delete her social media posts criticizing Rohit Sharma.

“Shama Mohamed made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party’s position. She has been asked to delete the posts and exercise greater caution in the future,” Khera posted on X.

The Congress further emphasized its respect for sporting icons, stating that it does not endorse statements that undermine their legacy.

Shama Mohamed Faces Backlash Over Rohit Sharma Comments

The controversy erupted after Mohamed body-shamed Rohit Sharma, calling him “overweight” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.” Facing severe criticism, she later deleted her tweets but remained defiant.

Speaking to ANI, Mohamed defended her statement, saying: “It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I have the right to compare him with previous captains. What is wrong in saying that? This is a democracy.”

BJP Slams Congress, Calls Out ‘Hypocrisy’

BJP leader Radhika Khera strongly criticized Mohamed’s remarks, accusing the Congress of humiliating athletes.

“This is the same Congress that denied athletes recognition for decades and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?” Khera wrote on X.

Taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, she added: “Rohit Sharma led India to a World Cup victory, while Rahul Gandhi can’t even lead his own party without sinking it into chaos!”

Cricket, Politics, and Public Outrage

The controversy, which erupted during the India-New Zealand Champions Trophy match, has triggered a political storm. While Mohamed remains firm on her stance, the Congress is scrambling to contain the damage.
