New Delhi: The Congress party has strongly condemned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his recent allegations that Gaurav Gogoi’s British wife, Elizabeth, has ties to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. The party has called on Sarma to provide proof of these claims and questioned why no formal investigation has been initiated.
Congress leader Rashid Alvi, while speaking to news agency ANI, demanded answers from Sarma. “I don’t know which Pakistani national’s name he is referring to, but first of all, the CM should tell where this information came from. What proof does he have? If such information came to him, why hasn’t an FIR been lodged till now?” Alvi remarked.
He further emphasized that making such serious allegations without evidence was an unacceptable form of political conduct. “The level of politics should not stoop so low. There is a limit to everything. Defaming opposition leaders and their families through media is not appropriate. Such statements are unfortunate,” Alvi added.
The controversy stemmed from Assam’s Cabinet directing the state’s top police officer to investigate alleged links between Ali Sheikh, a Pakistani national, and Elizabeth Gogoi. The state government is probing whether this connection could have implications on national security.
Ali Tauqeer Sheikh is the founder of Lead Pakistan, an organization focused on climate change, and was allegedly associated with Elizabeth Gogoi during her time in Islamabad. Himanta Biswa Sarma further claimed that both Elizabeth and Ali Sheikh had been involved with the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN), a global climate action group with operations in both India and Pakistan.
In response, Gaurav Gogoi vehemently denied the accusations, stressing his complete trust in the people of Assam. “I have full faith in the wisdom of the people of Assam that they can see through this obvious slander campaign,” Gogoi said. He also expressed confidence that the people would reject the alleged smear tactics, as demonstrated by voters in Jharkhand, where Himanta Sarma’s rhetoric was dismissed in the state assembly elections.
“The wisdom of the Assamese people will prevail, and they will vote for a Congress-led government in the upcoming election,” Gogoi concluded.
