The Congress party raised serious allegations on Friday, claiming that four of its main bank accounts have been frozen by the Income Tax department on what they termed as “flimsy grounds.” The move has sparked outcry within the opposition party, with leaders decrying it as an attack on democracy and accusing the ruling government of abusing its power.
Congress Treasurer, Ajay Maken, expressed deep concern during a press conference, stating, “Democracy has completely ended in India. All the accounts of the country’s main opposition party have been frozen.” Maken highlighted that the party was informed on Thursday about banks refusing to honor their cheques, leading to the revelation that the accounts of the Youth Congress and the Congress party itself had been seized.
“Income tax asked for ₹210 crore recovery from Youth Congress and Congress party. The crowdfunding money in our accounts has been frozen. Just 2 weeks before elections when the opposition’s accounts are frozen, it is equivalent to freezing the democracy…” Maken emphasized, as reported by ANI.
The freezing of accounts has significantly impacted the party’s financial capabilities, with Maken revealing, “Right now we don’t have any money to spend, to pay electricity bills, to pay salaries to our employees. Everything will be impacted, not only Nyay Yatra but all political activities will be impacted…”
Congress Chief, Mallikarjun Kharge, condemned the move, labeling it a “deep assault on Indian democracy.” He accused the Modi government of abusing power and targeting the largest opposition party just before the crucial Lok Sabha elections.
Kharge also criticized the unequal treatment, alleging that while the BJP would utilize “unconstitutional” money for elections, the funds collected by Congress through crowdfunding have been seized. He expressed skepticism about the future of elections and appealed to the judiciary to safeguard the multi-party system and protect democracy in India.
“We will take to the streets and fight strongly against this autocracy!” Kharge declared, highlighting the party’s determination to resist what they perceive as undemocratic actions by the government.
The freezing of Congress’ bank accounts has ignited a political firestorm, underscoring the intense polarization and high stakes ahead of the upcoming elections.
