Cong stoops to new low on Veer Savarkar, Shiv Sena faces the flak

Fadnavis takes dig at Sena for being forlorn for power

Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has once again waded into a controversy over Veer Savarkar. In the February edition of its Marathi magazine ‘Shidori’ Congress has belittled Savarkar by calling him Swatantryaveer Navhe Mafiveer (Not a freedom hero, but an apologist).

Criticising Veer Savarkar is nothing new for the Congress and so is the aggressive reaction by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But this time, there is all together a new dimension to Veer Savarkar criticism by Congress. This time, it has found a new shield to divert the criticism and it is none other than Shiv Sena, the newfound ally of Congress.

Known for its aggressive, sometimes violent, support of Veer Savarkar, Shiv Sena and its president Uddhav Thackeray finds itself in an awkward situation having forced to defend its ally.

From appealing to ‘publically whip the one, who criticises Veer Savarkar,’ Shiv Sena has come a long way to ‘it is now time to come out of history’. It was even forced to disown aggressive and provocative reactions by its Rajya Sabha MP and editor of mouthpiece Saamna, Sanjay Raut, on Veer Savarkar.

But this time, Shiv Sena leadership has found itself in a tricky situation. It is facing flack from BJP for something which it is not been responsible. It is Congress party that has belittled Veer Savarkar, but the BJP is taking the opportunity to hit out at its newfound foe.

Leader of Opposition in legislative assembly Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday demanded that Congress withdraw the magazine for publishing the articles terming Veer Savarkar an apologist and rapist and in the same breath. He has called Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray forlorn to remain in power. Congress is known anti Veer Savarkar. It stoops to any level to criticise Savarkar. But, how long Shiv Sena would take pinch of salt to remain in power?

Fadnavis said. It seems that Shiv Sena leaders will now have to defend Congress party as well, which once upon a time was its topmost enemy.
