New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday issued a clear directive to hotel owners and food stall operators along the Kanwar Yatra route, instructing them to comply with all statutory requirements related to licenses and registration. The apex court emphasized that it is not addressing the larger issues raised in the petition at this stage.
“All concerned hotel owners must ensure they have the valid licenses and registration certificates as required by law. We are not examining other arguments at this stage. The application is now closed,” the Court noted in its order.
The directive came while the Court was hearing a petition challenging a circular issued by the Uttar Pradesh government. The circular mandates food vendors and shopkeepers along the Kanwar Yatra path to prominently display QR codes revealing their identity and business details.
On the QR code issue, the bench clarified that it would not be addressing the matter in the interim hearing. Instead, the Court said that this concern, along with other associated arguments, will be taken up during the main proceedings which remain pending.
The petitioner had argued that mandatory display of such QR codes amounts to profiling and violates fundamental rights, especially if done selectively. However, the State contended that the rule was meant to enhance security and transparency during the mass pilgrimage.
