New Delhi: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted in the state assembly on Tuesday that the Third Battle of Panipat was a testament to the bravery and valor of the Marathas, rather than a defeat. His statement came while responding to a ‘Last Week Motion’ initiated by the opposition.
Fadnavis highlighted the state government’s initiative to honor Maratha warriors by constructing a ‘Shiv Smarak’ in Agra and acquiring land for a memorial in Panipat, where the historic battle took place in 1761 between the Marathas and Ahmad Shah Abdali.
However, opposition NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad questioned the need for a memorial at Panipat, arguing, “Panipat is not a symbol of our bravery or defeat. It will remind me of defeat. There is no memorial of defeat in the world.”
Responding firmly, Fadnavis reiterated that Panipat is a symbol of Maratha courage and should not be viewed solely as a loss. He emphasized that the battle showcased the Marathas’ commitment to defending Delhi and India, recalling that even the Mughal Emperor was paying ‘chauth’ to the Marathas at the time.
“When Ahmad Shah Abdali invaded Delhi, he sought Maratha intervention, recognizing their supremacy. The Marathas fought to protect India’s sovereignty,” Fadnavis stated, underscoring the Marathas’ crucial role in history.
