Team India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami has found himself at the center of a religious controversy after Muslim cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Barelvi criticized him for not keeping Roza (fast) during the holy month of Ramadan. The cleric, who is the President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, declared that Shami had committed a “grave sin” by skipping the fast despite being religiously obligated.

“Islam has declared fasting as obligatory for all sane and mature men and women. If someone deliberately does not fast, it is a grave sin. Mohammed Shami did not observe Roza, even though it was his religious duty,” Barelvi stated. He further added, “In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He should strictly follow Islamic obligations.”

The remarks sparked an uproar, especially after a video of Shami drinking juice during India’s Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia went viral. While some criticized him, a massive wave of support emerged online, with fans praising Shami for putting “country above religion.”

Shami played a pivotal role in India’s victory, dismantling Australia’s batting lineup with a crucial 3-wicket haul for 48 runs. His performance helped Team India secure a place in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, set to be held in Dubai on March 9.
