New Delhi: The Union Government has confirmed plans to allocate space for a memorial dedicated to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In a late-night release on Friday titled “Facts of the Matter Regarding Memorial for Former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh”, the Union Home Ministry detailed its commitment to honoring the legacy of the leader who spearheaded India’s economic reforms.

The statement revealed that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had formally requested the allocation of space for the memorial. Responding promptly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed Kharge and Singh’s family about the government’s decision to allocate space for the project.

“Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, HM Shri Amit Shah communicated to Congress President Shri Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial. In the meanwhile, cremation and other formalities can proceed, as a trust needs to be formed before the space is formally allocated,” the release read.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92 in AIIMS, Delhi, served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Renowned as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, his tenure marked a transformative period in the country’s growth trajectory.

The memorial proposal has been widely welcomed across the political spectrum, underscoring Singh’s enduring influence on India’s political and economic landscape. The government’s assurance of space allocation marks the first step in commemorating his legacy, while further developments are expected after the formation of the proposed trust.
