New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik and five others in connection with the alleged corruption in the award of Rs 2,200 crore civil works contract for the Kiru Hydropower Project. The chargesheet, filed after a three-year-long probe, was submitted before a special court and marks a major development in a high-profile case involving top-level administrative decisions.
The CBI had earlier conducted searches at Malik’s premises in February 2023, months after registering an FIR in 2022 over alleged irregularities in the awarding of the civil works to a private firm in 2019, during Malik’s tenure as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Malik, who served as Governor from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, had previously made headlines by claiming he was offered a Rs 300-crore bribe to approve two contentious files, one of which involved the Kiru project.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Malik said:“I am admitted in the hospital and not in a condition to talk to anyone. I am getting calls from many well-wishers which I am unable to take.”
While Malik had earlier denied any wrongdoing, he alleged that instead of pursuing those involved in corruption, the CBI raided his residence.
“The agency should have investigated the people I complained about. Instead, my house was raided,” he had said last year after the searches.
The case centers on the awarding of civil contracts for the Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project in Kishtwar, which is being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt Ltd (CVPPPL). The CBI alleges there were malpractices in tendering procedures and undue favours extended to a private firm, bypassing established guidelines.
