New Delhi: The Delhi Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Thursday as BJP MLAs tore into the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the damning Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report exposing massive irregularities in the previous AAP government’s excise policy. The debate, held amid the suspension of 21 opposition MLAs, saw AAP cornered over allegations of liquor license favoritism, illegal vends in residential areas, and the absence of liquor quality tests.

BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay launched a scathing attack, citing the ₹941 crore revenue loss due to exemptions given to select zonal licensees and another ₹890 crore loss from unretendered liquor licenses. “AAP’s excise policy encouraged illicit liquor sales, risking public health and safety,” Upadhyay alleged.

MLA Shikha Rai further accused AAP of pushing cheap liquor on the poor, worsening domestic violence and financial distress among low-income groups. “The ‘buy one, get one free’ liquor policy was a trap, luring struggling families into spending on alcohol instead of essentials,” she stated.

The session also saw outrage over the neglect of a Shaheed Bhagat Singh statue in Malviya Nagar, with Upadhyay slamming AAP’s “fake respect” for national heroes. He pointed out that a damaged statue stood unrepaired for three years, exposing AAP’s double standards.

With the CAG report blowing the lid off a scandal worth over ₹1,800 crore, BJP has intensified its demand for accountability, while AAP faces mounting pressure over the alleged liquor scam and misgovernance.
