BJP’s Giriraj Singh Sparks Controversy Over Mamata Banerjee’s Film Festival Participation

BJP MP Giriraj Singh ignited a heated debate by criticizing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s involvement in the Kolkata International Film Festival, particularly her lively interaction with Bollywood actor Salman Khan. Singh’s remarks, captured in a surfaced video, stirred uproar as he commented that Mamata Banerjee’s ‘thumka’ (hip-swaying dance move) at the festival was inappropriate.

Amid strong protests from Trinamool leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra, Singh defended his statement, asserting that he had used the word ‘jashn’ (celebration) and not ‘thumka.’ He emphasized his belief that it was justified to criticize Mamata Banerjee for engaging in celebrations at the film festival while the state grappled with corruption issues.

“TMC leaders are exaggerating my words,” Singh stated, addressing the controversy ignited by his comments.

In response, the official Trinamool Congress handle shared a video capturing Giriraj Singh’s use of the word ‘thumka’ along with accompanying gestures, refuting his denial. The party’s statement highlighted the video evidence, denouncing the BJP’s strategy of engaging in contentious behavior and subsequently staunchly defending it, despite clear and undeniable evidence to the contrary.
