The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday suggested that the opposition INDIA bloc is considering rotating the Leader of Opposition (LoP) role in the Lok Sabha, reportedly due to concerns over Rahul Gandhi’s performance in the position.
BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, representing the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, stated that several capable leaders within the opposition parties could take on the LoP role. She emphasized that while the discussions are ongoing, it remains an internal matter of the INDIA bloc.
“Yes, absolutely. I have also heard that there is talk of making the post of Leader of Opposition rotational. But I would politely say that this is an internal matter of the opposition,” Swaraj said during a press conference at the BJP headquarters.
Rahul Gandhi, who currently serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, holds the position as Congress is the single largest opposition party in the House. However, speculation about a potential rotation system highlights growing uncertainty within the opposition alliance as they strategize for the upcoming electoral battles.
Swaraj reiterated that the decision rests with the INDIA bloc but noted that if the opposition feels Gandhi’s performance as LoP is lacking, they have the option to rotate the position among other qualified leaders from the alliance.
