The political landscape in India is abuzz as the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to convene today for a crucial meeting. The focus of this gathering will be on finalizing the names of candidates for 125 Lok Sabha constituencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside all members of the CEC, is slated to be in attendance, indicating the significance of the decisions to be made.
Sources within the BJP said to TV9 that the party may unveil its first list of candidates following the meeting. Among the anticipated names are Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with select ministers who currently serve as Rajya Sabha MPs. The candidates to be announced encompass three categories: prominent VIP seats, representation for Rajya Sabha MPs, and constituencies where the BJP seeks to strengthen its presence.
Prior to the CEC meeting, a core group session was convened on Wednesday, chaired by BJP President J.P. Nadda. Discussions in this meeting revolved around candidate selection across six states, with careful consideration given to each state’s specific dynamics. The core committee is set to reconvene today at 7 pm, with participation from key figures including the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, both Deputy Chief Ministers, the BJP State President, and Union Ministers. Decisions regarding candidates for certain constituencies are expected to be reached during this session, preceding the subsequent CEC meeting.
In Maharashtra, however, discussions regarding seat allocation with allied parties are still ongoing, leading to the exclusion of Maharashtra Lok Sabha seats from the initial candidate list. While the BJP’s Central Election Committee gathers in Delhi today, the absence of Maharashtra and Bihar constituencies from the first list is notable, reflecting the ongoing negotiations with leaders such as Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde.
