Patna: With five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar set to fall vacant in April, political activity in the state has intensified, as both the ruling alliance and the opposition recalibrate their numbers and strategies. The vacancies will arise following the completion of terms of leaders from multiple parties, making the election crucial for power equations ahead of upcoming political contests.

In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, a candidate will need the backing of at least 41 MLAs to secure a seat in the Upper House. The BJP-led NDA, which commands a strong majority with over 200 MLAs, is comfortably placed to win four of the five seats. However, the contest for the fifth seat is expected to be closely fought, as the NDA will need the support of a few additional legislators beyond its assured tally.

Sources within political circles suggest that the BJP is likely to nominate a senior state leader to the Rajya Sabha, while discussions are also ongoing about whether smaller NDA allies will be accommodated this time. The future of some outgoing MPs, including prominent faces from JD(U), is expected to be decided soon, with party leadership keen on maintaining continuity in Parliament.

On the other hand, the opposition INDIA bloc faces an uphill task. With limited strength in the Assembly, it currently lacks the numbers to win even a single seat independently. This has shifted attention towards MLAs from parties that are not formally aligned with either camp. Lawmakers from AIMIM and the BSP are being viewed as potential kingmakers, and their stand could influence the final outcome for the last seat.
