Mumbai: A nationwide shutdown call by central trade unions and farmer organisations on Thursday led to disruptions in banking, transport and select public services across several states, though the overall impact varied regionally.
The strike was organised to oppose recent labour reforms and proposed legislation related to agriculture and electricity. Multiple bank employee associations, including prominent national unions, extended support to the protest, resulting in reduced staffing at branches in some cities. While most banks remained open, customers reported slower services and delays in routine transactions.
Public transport services were also affected in certain pockets. In parts of Kerala, including Thiruvananthapuram, sections of state-run bus employees and private operators joined the agitation, leading to fewer buses on the roads. Commuters in a few districts faced inconvenience during peak hours.
Farmer bodies, led by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), mobilised supporters in rural belts and organised demonstrations at district headquarters. The groups reiterated their demand for withdrawal of the four labour codes and voiced objections to proposed changes in electricity and seed regulations.
According to farmer representatives, amendments in the power sector could raise costs for agricultural consumers and households. Protesters also opposed the installation of smart meters and demanded free electricity up to a fixed limit. Concerns were additionally expressed about new seed-related proposals, which unions claim may create regulatory gaps and price instability.
Another key issue flagged by farmer organisations was the future of rural employment schemes. They alleged that recent policy adjustments could dilute safeguards under existing job guarantee programmes.
Despite the strike call, the extent of disruption differed widely. Metropolitan centres reported largely normal activity, while some districts witnessed rallies, road blockades and temporary service interruptions. Authorities stated that contingency plans were in place to minimise inconvenience to the public.
