Bengaluru: In a shocking case of road rage and senseless violence, a 29-year-old software engineer lost his life in Bengaluru after a dispute over a cigarette turned fatal. The incident occurred on May 10 in the early hours near Kolankunte Cross Subramanya Vyapthi, and was captured on CCTV footage.
According to the police, the victim, HN Sanjay, a resident of Vajarahalli and a tech professional, was standing by the roadside with his friend Chetan Pujamath around 4 AM, sipping tea during a break. It was then that 31-year-old Prateek, a manager at a private firm and a resident of Rajarajeshwari Nagar, arrived at the scene in a white Creta and asked Sanjay to fetch him a cigarette.
When Sanjay refused, a verbal altercation ensued. “The two individuals declined his request, which led to an argument. After finishing their tea, they left on a Yamaha bike,” said DCP (South) Lokesh Jagalasar.
Minutes later, while Sanjay and Chetan were heading back to their workplace on the bike, Prateek allegedly followed them in his car and rammed into their vehicle from behind. “The car came from behind at speed and crashed into their two-wheeler. Sanjay suffered a severe head injury after hitting the pavement,” the officer added.
Sanjay was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on May 13. His friend Chetan sustained multiple injuries and remains under treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accused was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack. Eyewitnesses claim Prateek appeared enraged during the earlier confrontation and deliberately targeted the duo after briefly leaving the scene.
