Bengaluru: BEML Limited, a leading multi-sector engineering and manufacturing enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has secured an additional order worth ₹414 crore from the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) for the supply of six more driverless metro train sets (36 cars) for Phase 2, Reach 5 of the Bengaluru Metro. With this expansion, BEML’s total order for the Yellow Line corridor increases from 60 train sets (360 cars) to 66 train sets (396 cars).

The new train sets will operate on the Yellow Line, interfacing seamlessly with the Siemens signaling system, and enhancing the operational capacity and efficiency of Bengaluru’s rapidly expanding metro network. All trainsets are being designed, engineered, and manufactured at BEML’s state-of-the-art facilities in Bengaluru. Built with high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel, the six-car driverless metros offer superior structural strength and long service life. Each car is equipped with two roof-mounted saloon air-conditioners, ensuring a modern and comfortable passenger experience.

This contract is an extension of Contract 5RS-DM, originally awarded in August 2023 after a globally competitive bid. The base contract, worth ₹3,177 crore, covers design & manufacturing, supply and installation, testing & commissioning and up to 15 years of comprehensive maintenance.

This new order follows BMRCL’s previous expansion in March 2025, valued at approximately ₹405 crore, which added 42 metro cars for Reach 6, taking that contract from 53 trainsets (318 cars) to 69 trainsets (360 cars).

Shantanu Roy, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML Limited, said, “We are pleased to receive this repeat order from BMRCL, reinforcing our deep partnership and the trust placed in BEML’s engineering capabilities. These additional trainsets will significantly expand the operational capacity of Bengaluru Metro and support the city’s fast-growing mobility needs. BEML remains committed to delivering world-class, energy-efficient and reliable metro solutions for India’s urban transit systems.”

As the largest rolling stock supplier to BMRCL, BEML continues to play a pivotal role in shaping Bengaluru’s mass transit infrastructure. The upcoming trainsets will feature IP-based Passenger Announcement & Information Systems, Passenger Saloon Surveillance System (PSSS), LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps, Electrically operated automatic doors and Synchronization with Platform Screen Doors for enhanced safety.

With this expanded order, BEML further strengthens its leadership in indigenous metro manufacturing and reinforces its commitment to building India’s next-generation urban mobility ecosystem.
